Have you ever accidentally hit the emergency button while your phone is locked and your phone stars to call 911? What do you do in that situation? Most people hang up quickly.
Did you know that sometimes, even though you think you hung up in time, the call goes through to a 911 dispatcher and they are obligated to respond to all calls. If they get the call from your home, they can and will dispatch police to your home. This takes away precious resources and time from actual emergencies.
So, if ever you dial 911 in error, don’t just hang up. Stay on the line and let the dispatcher know that you dialed it in error. It’s just the courteous thing to do.
And on that note, a major pet peeve of mine is when people call a wrong number and just hang up when you answer. Is it so hard to say “Sorry, wrong number?”.
